Month Eight of Impasse

February 4

Illinois is in month eight of fiscal year 2016 (FY16) without a state budget, or spending plan, in place. What this means is that the devastation to our families and communities and the crumbling of our health and human service safety-net systems continues without an end in sight.

The impact of the state budget impasse has most recently been documented by the results of the third survey conducted by United Way of Illinois reporting that 85% of agencies have cut the number of clients they serve, many of whom are children. To further illustrate the consequences of the inaction by Governor Rauner and our legislative leaders, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois recently announced the closure of over 30 programs and elimination of over 750 positions, about 43% of its workforce, due to the state budget stalemate.

We at EverThrive IL continue to advocate and call on our lawmakers and Governor Rauner to end the impasse. During the Governor's State of the State Address on January 27th, we stood with our coalition partners within the Responsible Budget Coalition (RBC) in Springfield. The RBC continues to call on Governor Rauner to end the impasse and work with our state's lawmakers to choose revenue and pass a responsible budget that reflects the needs and priorities of Illinois families and communities. Join us and make your voice heard by contacting Governor Rauner and your elected officials and demanding that they choose revenue and pass a responsible budget now!
